CJCA Mixed Grade Summary (2026/27)

Source: CJCA-Mixed-Grade-Summary-as-at-1st-August-2026.pdf, pages 1–5 (page 6 is blank).

The CJCA’s Mixed Grade Summary as at 1 August 2026: a quick overview of every mixed grade, from Kiwi to Year 8 Premier, for the 2026/27 season. It is a summary only. Where it differs from a grade’s rules, the grade rules take precedence; the differences found are listed in the last section.

The grade rules: Kiwi · Year 3–4 · Super 8s · Year 5 Hardball · Year 6 Pre-Christmas · Year 6 Post-Christmas · Year 7–8 Morning · Year 7–8 Premier.

How this page is laid out:

  • The CJCA table groups the grades into Superstar Cricket (Kiwi, Year 3, Year 4), Primary (Super 8, Year 5, Year 6) and Intermediate (Year 7 and 8). Each group has its own card, with the rows under the CJCA’s headings General, Batting, Bowling and Fielding.
  • The wording is as published, including capitals. Highlights (like this) and bold follow the PDF, which highlights in yellow and green; whole cells set in bold are shown plain.
  • Where the CJCA merges one cell across several grades, its text is repeated in each grade’s column.
  • The PDF’s page 1 has separate columns for Year 6 before and after Christmas. Pages 2 and 3 have one Year 6 column, headed “ALL Year 6 (until Christmas)” and “Year 6 (until Christmas)”, so the Primary tables from those pages have three columns.
  • Labels in italics are editor additions (the PDF leaves that row unlabelled).

Rules: Christchurch Junior Cricket Association (CJCA). Reformatted as coaching notes; see the source PDF for the official wording.

Possible errors or inconsistencies

Checked against the 2026/27 rules for each grade. Where they differ, follow the rules.

Affecting how the game is played

  1. Bowling ends (Super 8, Year 5, Year 6 before Christmas): the summary says “5 overs bowled each end”. The Super 8, Year 5 and Year 6 pre-Christmas rules say “All bowling is to be from the same end”, and the Year 6 pre-Christmas rules also say “5 overs bowled at the same end to speed up the innings.”
  2. Max run up (Primary): the summary says “12m”. The Super 8 and Year 5 rules say “Bowlers should have a maximum of a 10-metre run up.” The Year 6 rules give no run-up limit. (The CJCA Girls summary gives “10m” for Girls Junior Super 8.)
  3. Balls per over and wides/no-balls (Year 6 before Christmas): the summary says “6” balls and “Runs scored from ‘Free Hit’ only”. The Year 6 pre-Christmas rules say “Minimum Balls per over 6 – Maximum 8” and “Wides and no-balls score 1 run plus any extra runs scored and are re-bowled up to a maximum of 8 balls per over”.
  4. Year 6 after Christmas, columns missing: pages 2–3 have no after-Christmas column, so its Batting, Bowling and Fielding cells are only the “Year 6 after Christmas” lines in the merged Primary cells and the box below the table. The post-Christmas rules differ from the until-Christmas Year 6 column in several ways:
    • boundary: “Year 6 Hardball: 40 metres or natural boundaries”, not “35 m or Natural boundaries”;
    • a “Last batter standing” rule, not “NO”;
    • “a bonus 5 runs” per grace-period wicket, not “x3 / wicket”;
    • “The batting side is awarded 1 run for each wide or no ball, plus any additional runs scored”, not “Runs scored from ‘Free Hit’ only”;
    • “Minimum Balls per over 6 – Maximum 8”, not “6”.
  5. Bowling order: the note says “Y6 , Y7, Y7 Premier and Y8 – All must bowl 3 overs before anyone bowls a 4th”. Year 6 bowlers may bowl only 3 overs (the summary’s own “3”), and the Year 6 rules say “No bowler may bowl a 3rd over until ALL others have bowled 2”. The note also leaves out Year 8 Premier.
  6. Bowling order (Year 5, Super 8): the note says “All must bowl 2 overs before anyone bowls a 3rd”. The rules say “all bowlers should bowl 1 over before any bowler bowls a 2nd” and “All bowlers should bowl 2 overs, unless you are playing with less than 8 players”.
  7. Max overs per bowler (Year 7 & 8, Premier): the summary says “5”. The rules say both “No bowler may bowl more than 4 overs total in a 27 or 30-over game unless agreed to by both teams” and “Max 5 overs per bowler” in the same bullet.
  8. 4th overs (Year 7 & 8, Premier): the summary says “No one can bowl 4th until all have bowled 3”. The rules say this (“No bowler may bowl a 4th over until ALL others have bowled 3”), but also “A minimum of 8 players must have bowled 3 overs each before any player can bowl a fourth over, provided the ninth player is the designated specialist wicketkeeper”.
  9. Year 7 & 8 Morning, extras on the last ball: the ** note says extras are worth 2 runs on the “6th ball of an over (Year 7/8 Morning grades)”. The Morning rules instead say “Where a wide or a no ball is bowled on the 8th ball of an over, 2 runs will be scored … as the maximum deliveries in an over are 8” and “If a NO BALL is bowled in the first to SEVENTH ball of an over, the next ball is a ‘Free Hit’”, while also saying “Overs to be a maximum of 6 balls”. The Morning rules look to have copied the Premier wording.
  10. Max overs per spell: the summary gives “1”, “2” and “3”. None of the rules set a spell length; they say only that a bowler may not bowl successive overs (“A bowler may not bowl two overs in a row”, “No bowler can bowl successive overs.”).
  11. Rotate positions (Year 6, Year 7 & 8, Premier): the summary says “No”. The general conditions for these grades say “Coaches and Managers should rotate fielders through positions, so they get an opportunity to field in most positions including wicket keeper.”
  12. Exclusion zone (Kiwi, Year 3 and 4): the summary says “10m square from each stumps”. The rules say “Cones should be placed around a 10m circle”.
  13. Free-hit cones and one swing: the Free Hits note says cones go “1m ahead of popping crease” (Year 5, Super 8) and “A batter only gets one swing at a free hit. (No change)”. The Super 8 and Year 5 rules say free hits are “off cones which are set up on each side of the wicket beside the batter”. The Kiwi, Year 3–4, Super 8 and Year 5 rules all say “Batters should be coached to only get one swing at a free hit, although discretion can be used, and coaches can encourage good technique to have another swing.”
  14. Year 3 and 4 bats: the summary says “Bats Plastic or Wooden”. The rules say “In Year 3 & 4 Wooden bats should be used”, with plastic gear only for “those new to cricket or with different abilities”.
  15. Start time (Primary): the summary gives only “9am”. The Super 8, Year 5 and Year 6 rules add “or if there is a Friday round, then it will be a 4.30pm start.”
  16. Super 8 equipment: the summary says “Minimum front pad and all other safety equipment – box optional”. The rules say “Full Protective equipment should be warn by batter including a Helmet”.

Document and wording issues

  1. Year 6 column headings: page 1 has “Year 6 Sections (until Xmas)” and “NEW Year 6 Sections (after Christmas)”. Page 2 has one column headed “ALL Year 6 (until Christmas)”: it says “ALL” but also “until Christmas”. Page 3 has “Year 6 (until Christmas)”.
  2. Out-of-date note: “Effective start of 2024/25 season - either Ball after the awarding of the Free Hit off a Tee may be hit”, in a summary for 2026/27.
  3. The *** footnote: the Year 7 & 8 Morning wides cell (a 27-over game) says “except 30th see *** below”, but the *** note is about the 8th ball in Premier grades and doesn’t mention a 30th over. The note itself runs two sentences together: “on the 8th ball of an over. 2 wide/no balls will be scored”.
  4. Ball details: Kiwi “Soft Yellow/Red ball” (the rules say “Soft (Yellow) Ball”); Super 8 “Junior Match Incrediball 130-134 gram” (the rules say “Kookaburra Star Softaball Cricket Ball (weight range 130-133grams)”); Year 3 and 4 leave out the rules’ other ball, the “Kookaburra – Super Softaball”.
  5. Things the rules don’t say: “Last man standing” “NO” for Kiwi to Year 6 before Christmas (the rules say only “PLAYERS REMAIN BATTING WHEN THEY ARE OUT” for the youngest grades). Also “exc slips/gully (off side)” for Super 8, Year 5 and Year 6 before Christmas (their rules text says only “this excludes the wicket keeper”; slips and gullies appear on the pitch maps), and “Does not include Bowler or Wicket Keeper” for the 3-fielder rule. The Premier rules describe the PlayHQ step as “adding “Additional Event/s””, not “ACTIONS”.
  6. Rotate Positions cell (Primary): the cell borders don’t line up with the column headings. “Yes. Keeper encouraged to change” sits mostly under Year 5 Hardball and is shown there.
  7. Field configurations:
    • There is no map for Year 6 after Christmas (18 m). The “Year 6 Hardball” map shows a 16 m pitch.
    • The Mini Mags, Year 3 & 4 map key reads “Batter and may hit either ball forward of the wicket”.
    • The Year 6 post-Christmas rules have the same 18 m / 16 m mismatch: “18 metres” in the text, a “16m pitch” on their own map.
  8. Mixed and Girls summaries disagree for grades played to the same rules: Super 8 “TWO Small Tees” and “12m” run-up (Girls Junior Super 8: “Small Tees” and “10m”). Year 3 and 4 have “30m or Natural boundaries” and “10m square from each stumps” (Girls Mini Mags: “25 m or Natural boundaries” and “10m from batsman ex slips/gully and keeper”).
