Scoring Summary – Year 6 Hardball Pre-Christmas (2026/27)
Source: Year-6-Hardball-Grade-PRE-Christmas-as-at-26th-August-2026.pdf, summarised.
How runs are allocated in Year 6 Hardball before Christmas (pairs cricket, 8 a side, 20 overs). A quick summary of the Year 6 Pre-Christmas rules, which take precedence.
Rules: Christchurch Junior Cricket Association (CJCA). Reformatted as coaching notes; see the source PDF for the official wording.
How Runs Are Scored
To the batter
- Runs taken: every run the batters complete.
- Boundaries: a four or six. Boundaries are 35 m or natural, and a four or six is also signalled when the ball reaches a closer marked boundary (cones, a path, another match).
- Run-out: the batting side keeps all the runs being attempted, provided the batters crossed on the final run (a run-out on the third run keeps all 3). The runs go to the appropriate batter.
Extras to the batting side
- Wide: 1 run plus any runs scored, and the ball is re-bowled.
- No-ball: 1 run plus any runs scored, the ball is re-bowled, and the next ball is a free hit.
- Wide or no-ball as the last ball of an over (up to the 8th): 2 runs, as no free hit can follow.
- Byes and overthrows: unlimited.
- Over length: wides and no-balls are re-bowled up to a maximum of 8 balls per over, except in the final over of each innings, when 6 legitimate balls must be bowled.
On a free hit
- No-ball: 1 run plus any runs from the shot, and the next ball is still a free hit.
- Wide that the batter hits: it becomes a normal delivery – only the runs from the shot, and the batter can be out in all the normal ways.
- Wide that the batter leaves or misses: 1 run plus any runs taken, and the next ball is still a free hit.
- The only way to be out is run out.
To the bowling side
- Every dismissal: 3 bonus runs to the bowling side, added to its batting total as extras. This includes run-outs.
- The batter is not out of the game: players remain batting when they are out. The batters swap ends (not after a run-out), and the out is recorded with an X, with the bowler credited with the wicket.
Team total
- Each team’s score starts at zero.
- Team total = runs scored while batting (runs off the bat and extras) + 3 bonus runs for every wicket taken while bowling.
- The grade is non-competitive: scores are used only for grading, so take care when announcing who has won.
